Originally from Brazil, Haroldo moved to the United States in late 1999. Two years later, Haroldo Silva started pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University (FIU), graduating with a minor in Chemistry. As an undergraduate, Haroldo Silva joined the Honors College and several honor societies at FIU, winning various scholarships and awards, including the Dean’s Merit Scholarship and the David Maurer Excellence in Biology Award. While at FIU, as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and research assistant, Haroldo published his undergraduate research in the American Journal of Physiology ñ Cell Physiology as well as presented it at national conferences. In the fall of 2006, Haroldo started his doctoral studies in Bioengineering at UC Berkeley. His project aims to mechanistically understand and enhance the process of skeletal muscle regeneration using both adult and embryonic stem cells and supportive biosynthetic microenvironments. As a graduate student, Haroldo was awarded the Chancellor’s Fellowship, William V. Power Graduate Award, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Honorable Mention for two consecutive years, and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine Fellowship. His doctoral research has been presented at national and international conferences, and he has published two peer-reviewed articles. Haroldo is also completing the Management of Technology Program at the Haas School of Business.
