Siebel Scholars Program Expanded to Include Bioengineering

Leading Bioengineers to Join Peers in Business and Computer Science

PALO ALTO, Calif.—September 14, 2009—The Siebel Foundation today announced it has expanded the Siebel Scholars program to recognize and engage outstanding leaders in the field of bioengineering.  As breakthrough discoveries in bioengineering are crucial to fundamental global issues, including health, food production, and water supplies, the Siebel Scholars program will include the world’s leading schools pioneering advances in these areas.  These universities’ most accomplished bioengineering graduate students will join a growing community of 540 past and present Scholars that includes their peers from top business and computer science programs.

Bioengineering applies engineering sciences, methods, and techniques to problems in medicine, biology, and other related fields.  The world’s leading universities are engaged in cutting-edge research in this discipline to solve urgent global problems.  Five of these institutions will each select five top-ranked graduate students—based upon academic excellence and leadership—to participate in the Siebel Scholars program.  Each of the Class of 2010 Siebel Scholars will receive a $35,000 award for his or her final year of graduate studies.

With the introduction of bioengineering, Siebel Scholars will include top talent from several institutions already participating in the program, and from two universities new to the initiative, Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, San Diego.

“It’s an honor to be selected from among the top bioengineering programs and offer five of our outstanding graduate students entry into a vibrant community of exceptionally talented future leaders,” said Nick Jones, Benjamin T. Rome Dean, Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University.  “The Siebel Scholars program will expand our students’ opportunities for entrepreneurship and collaboration, which are themes already integral to our program.”

“The Jacobs School commends the Siebel Foundation for its vision to include the leading bioengineering programs in the United States in the Siebel Scholars Program,” said Frieder Seible, Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego.  “We are pleased that our students have been recognized for the quality of their research in a wide-range of emerging areas, from systems biology to regenerative medicine.  As Siebel Scholars, our bioengineering students are poised to make even greater strides in breakthrough discoveries that will benefit society.”

The Siebel Foundation also today announced the expansion of the Siebel Scholars program to include leaders from China.  Class of 2010 Siebel Scholars from Tsinghua University, China will join Scholars from the fields of bioengineering, business, and computer science—and alumni of the program—at the annual Siebel Scholars conference in spring of 2010.  Hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Siebel Scholars will address the topic of climate change with world experts and thought leaders.

The Siebel Scholars program was established by the Siebel Foundation in 2000, and comprises graduate students who rank top of their class.  Scholars are selected by the dean of their respective schools on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated qualities of leadership.  Siebel Scholars also serve as key advisors to the Siebel Foundation, guiding the development of innovative programs the Foundation initiates.
