2010 - Matthew Skaruppa

Matthew Skaruppa’s passion for beer has less to do with the beverage and more to do with the business of brewing. Seeking to find the skills and strategies characteristic of successful entrepreneurs, Matt has become something of a connoisseur of the microbrewery business.

After several years at Bain & Company, Matt decided he wanted to work in-house to develop leadership skills and round out his experience as a consultant and his undergraduate training in Chemical Engineering.  He gained those insights by working alongside microbrew magnate Jim Koch of the Boston Beer Company—brewer of Samuel Adams lager and other beers.  His experiences in beer brewing, and interest from fellow graduate students, prompted him to help found an academic club at Stanford GSB focused on the business challenges facing the microbrewing industry.
Matt is also a member of the leadership team that produces View From the Top, a Stanford Graduate School of Business speaker series that features distinguished entrepreneurs from around the world.  Ultimately, Matt says he would like to be in a position to drastically influence the course of a company, with responsibility for its people and its success.
Matt will receive his Master’s degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business in spring 2010.  He is a summa cum laude graduate of Northwestern University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.
