2002 - Paul Strasma

You’ve just been promoted for an outstanding product launch—and within the week find yourself in charge of its recall.  It’s the type of case scenario that most students roll their eyes at; but was exactly the challenge Paul Strasma faced at Abbott Laboratories’ Diabetes Care division.  So he rolled up his sleeves and led the development and launch of an improved replacement over the next 18 months.

Paul’s plans to be a physicist shifted when he was seduced by the complexities of operating a business.  He first went into consulting, then pursued an MBA at MIT Sloan to learn about science-based entrepreneurship.  Paul joined Baxter International, where he on marketed pharmaceuticals and medical devices, before focusing on new product development at Abbott.  Now, Paul is applying his industry expertise and scientific background as Director of Marketing for GluMetrics, a medical device startup currently conducting initial clinical trials.

An active member of the Siebel Scholars community, Paul has found annual conference topics to be thought-provoking and relevant even years later:  learning from Dr. Weismann at the 2002 conference on stem cell research proved invaluable when Paul later connected with an entrepreneur developing a novel device for harvesting stem cells.  Paul recently addressed the inaugural Bioengineering class of Siebel Scholars from the University of San Diego and looks forward to future cross-disciplinary collaborations among Siebel Scholars.
